After clearing out the fire damaged property, team members begin wiping down every surface to remove smoke residues and odors. They start with dry sponges and then use cleaners for difficult areas. As the residues layers grow thicker or stickier, they use stronger cleaners. If an item is not cleanable without causing more damage, team leaders contact the owner and the insurance company. They either dispose of the item at the company’s direction or continue cleaning it if the owner still desires to keep it and wants to absorb the cost. 

Before our response teams arrive to begin work, there are two things you can do to make the process go smoother. 

•  Have your insurance documents ready for us. That includes the name of the company, its phone number, your policy number, and the report from the insurance adjuster. It is essential to bring us in as quickly as possible, but the insurance company should view the damage before we begin restoration. That way, team members do not waste efforts on the property the company pays to replace, not repair or restore. 

• Turn off the power. If the fire damaged any wiring in the home, then an electrical current running through them is another fire waiting to happen. It is also a direct threat to team members, the owners, and anyone else in the home.
